DIY Magnesium Lotion Recipe
This DIY Magnesium Lotion is not only rich in magnesium but also deeply moisturizing, thanks to the nourishing combination of tallow, beeswax, and almond oil. Magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a crucial role in hundreds of bodily processes, from muscle relaxation to energy production. One of the most effective ways to boost your magnesium levels is through topical application. Let’s get into the recipe and benefits of making your own magnesium lotion at home.

Why Make Your Own Magnesium Lotion?
Store-bought magnesium lotions often contain artificial fragrances, preservatives, and other undesirable ingredients. By making your own, you can:
- Control the quality of the ingredients.
- Avoid harmful chemicals.
- Customize the fragrance to your liking.
- Save money in the long run.
Why Use Magnesium Oil Topically?
Unlike oral magnesium supplements, which may cause digestive discomfort, topical magnesium is absorbed directly through the skin into the bloodstream. This method bypasses the digestive system, making it a great option for those with sensitive stomachs or absorption issues.
I don’t have digestive issues when taking magnesium orally so I do it along with using the cream.

Ingredients
This recipe calls for Magnesium oil, there are plenty of tutorials on the internet teaching you how to make your own magnesium brine. I have looked into it and have decided to buy it rather than make my own from flakes. Here is an article on why you shouldn’t make your own magnesium brine Ultimately it is up to you. It would certainly be cheaper to buy the big bag of flakes and make your own but the purity and end product are not equivalent.

Equipment
- Double boiler or heat-safe bowl and saucepan. Beeswax can be difficult to clean out of bowls. I use an old crockpot designated for just these purposes. Otherwise, an old glass bowl or jar nestled inside a pot of water works well too.
- Whisk or handheld blender.
- Glass jar or lotion container for storage. I love these jars for homemade beauty products. They are affordable and adorable. The presentation is nice for gifts.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Whipped Magnesium Lotion

- Melt the tallow and beeswax:
- Place the tallow and beeswax in a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a saucepan of simmering water. Or keep an old crockpot for this use like I do.
- Stir occasionally until fully melted and combined.
- Add the almond oil:
- Once melted, remove from heat and stir in the almond oil.
- Incorporate magnesium oil:
- Allow the mixture to cool
- Gradually whisk or blend in the magnesium oil. If using a handheld blender, this step will create a creamy whipped texture.
- Add essential oils (optional):
- Stir in your chosen essential oils for fragrance.
- Transfer to a container:
- Pour or scoop the lotion into a glass jar or lotion container.
- Allow it to cool and solidify before use.
Tips for Best Results
- Storage: Store your magnesium lotion in a cool, dry place. It can last up to six months when kept properly.
- Application: Apply to clean, dry skin, focusing on areas prone to tension, such as shoulders, back, and legs.
- Patch Test: If you’re new to magnesium oil, test a small area first to ensure it doesn’t irritate your skin. I notice that if I use magnesium oil directly under my arms it burns a bit.
- Use on the soles of your feet before bed
