DIY Whipped Face and Body Cream with Tallow
This whipped tallow cream combines grass-fed tallow with nourishing oils like almond, olive, or avocado for a soft, easily absorbed texture that leaves skin feeling silky smooth. Whether you have dry, sensitive, or combination skin, this cream offers deep hydration without harsh chemicals.
Why Use Tallow in Skincare?
Tallow, especially from grass-fed animals, is loaded with vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with essential fatty acids. Its composition closely resembles human sebum, making it easily absorbed and ideal for skin restoration. The added oils further enhance the cream by providing extra moisture and antioxidants.
Ingredients
- ½ cup grass-fed tallow you can learn to render your own here
- 1-2 tablespoons almond oil (or your preferred oil: olive, avocado, jojoba, etc.) I chose Almond, and you can read about the benefits of almond oil for your skin here.
- Optional: 10-15 drops of essential oils like lavender, frankincense, or rosemary for fragrance and added skin benefits ( I used this lilac oil and it smells lovely!)
Equipment Needed
- Hand mixer or stand mixer
- Mixing bowl
- Double boiler setup
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Clean glass jar for storage
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Melt the Tallow
Gently melt the tallow using a double boiler over low heat. Homemade tallow is often very hard. I purchased this tallow and it was much softer than my homemade tallow. - Combine Ingredients:
In a mixing bowl, add the softened tallow and 1-2 tablespoons of your chosen oil. Start with 1 tablespoon, adding more if you prefer a lighter texture. I used 1 TBS with this softer tallow, you will likely need 2 tbs if your tallow is very solid. - Cool the Mixture: Leave the tallow and oil out on the counter until it begins to become slightly solid. If you are impatient like me, you can stick it in the fridge to speed up the process.
- Whip the Mixture:
Use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip the mixture for 3-5 minutes until it becomes fluffy and light. The longer you whip, the smoother and airier the cream will be. - Add Essential Oils (Optional):
If desired, add 5-10 drops of essential oil and whip for another minute to incorporate. - Store in a Clean Jar:
Transfer the whipped cream to a clean glass jar with a lid. Store it in a cool, dry place. This cream can last for several months without refrigeration.
How to Use Your Whipped Tallow Cream
- Face: Apply a small amount to your face after cleansing, especially at night for deep hydration.
- Body: Use it as an all-over body moisturizer to soothe dry skin, especially on elbows, knees, and hands.
- Lips: Dab a tiny amount on your lips to prevent chapping.
- Stretch Marks & Scars: Massage it onto areas that need extra care, like scars or stretch marks.
Customization Tips
- Lighter Texture: If you prefer a softer cream, use a higher ratio of liquid oils.
- Fragrance-Free Option: Skip essential oils if you have sensitive skin or prefer an unscented cream.
- Extra Rich Cream: Use heavier oils like avocado or olive oil for intense hydration.
Benefits of Tallow Cream
- Deeply Moisturizing: Penetrates the skin for long-lasting hydration.
- Natural and Non-Toxic: No synthetic chemicals or preservatives.
- Supports Skin Healing: The vitamins and fatty acids in tallow promote cell regeneration and repair.
