Why Use a Beard Balm?
This is my husband’s question. He just recently grew a beard at my request, he has never had one before so this extra step of grooming a beard is a bit lost on him. Beard balm is essential for maintaining a soft, healthy, and manageable beard. It helps:
- Moisturize the beard and underlying skin, preventing dryness and itchiness.
- Tame flyaways and provide light styling hold, plus it adds a bit of shine.
- Strengthen hair and reduce breakage.
- Enhance beard growth with nutrient-rich oils and butters.
- Add a pleasant scent for a fresh and masculine aroma.
DIY Beard Balm Recipe
Ingredients:
These ingredients were all measured on a digital scale, the ounces are by weight. However, you can use whatever measurement you want, these are all just equal parts. Also, if you are missing one of the oils and still want to make this, go ahead and make it with what you have, it may not be as nourishing without each one but it will still be good I am sure.
Also, most of these ingredients can be used to make other salves and balms. Check out my other posts listed below.
- 1 oz almond oil
- 1 oz beeswax
- 1 oz shea or mango butter
- 1 oz coconut oil
- 1 oz tallow
- 1 oz argan oil
- 25 drops essential oils (bergamot, pine, and cedarwood recommended)

I use this old mini crockpot for making salves and balms. I just wipe it out before I put it away. Check thrift stores for something like this. Any double-boiler type setup will do though, you can use an old jar nestled in a pot of boiling water as well.
Instructions:
- Melt the ingredients: In a double boiler, combine the beeswax, shea (or mango) butter, coconut oil, and tallow. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until fully melted.
- Add almond oil and argan oil: Remove from heat and stir in the almond oil and argan oil to help cool the mixture slightly.
- Incorporate essential oils: Once the mixture is warm but not hot, add the essential oils and stir well to distribute the fragrance evenly.
- Pour into containers: Transfer the mixture into small tins or jars while still liquid. Let it cool and harden at room temperature.
- Use and enjoy: Scrape a small amount of balm onto your fingers, rub between your palms, and apply evenly to your beard for conditioning and styling.
Tips for the Best Beard Balm
- Choose high-quality ingredients to maximize the benefits for your beard and skin.
- Adjust the firmness by adding more beeswax for a firmer balm or reducing it for a softer consistency.
- Experiment with scents by swapping essential oils to suit your preference.
