In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of making your own tallow balm, and look at the benefits of tallow in skincare, and share tips on how to use this versatile balm.
I have tried several different tallow balm recipes. Many times they were gritty or wanted to separate. I decided to try making it with beeswax and I love the way it turned out. It is so smooth and it doesn’t separate.

Benefits of Tallow in Skincare
- Deep Moisturization: Tallow is rich in fatty acids that closely resemble the natural oils found in human skin. This allows it to deeply moisturize and nourish the skin, making it ideal for dry or damaged skin.
- Anti-aging Properties: Tallow contains vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are known for their anti-aging benefits. These vitamins help improve skin elasticity, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promote a youthful complexion.
- Skin Barrier Support: The fatty acids in tallow help strengthen the skin’s barrier function, protecting it from environmental damage and preventing moisture loss. This can be particularly beneficial for people with sensitive or compromised skin.
- Anti-Inflammatory and Healing: Tallow has anti-inflammatory properties that can help soothe irritated skin and promote healing. It’s a great option for conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and other inflammatory skin issues.
Benefits of Rosehip Oil in Skincare
Rosehip oil is a wonderful ingredient in skincare, renowned for its numerous benefits that cater to various skin concerns. Rich in essential fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins, rosehip oil is for its ability to rejuvenate and nourish the skin. Here are some of the key benefits of rosehip oil:
- Hydration: The essential fatty acids in rosehip oil help to deeply hydrate the skin, making it an excellent moisturizer for dry and flaky skin.
- Anti-Aging: Packed with vitamins A and C, rosehip oil promotes collagen production, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and improving skin elasticity.
- Brightening: The high content of vitamin C in rosehip oil helps to brighten the skin, reducing the appearance of dark spots and hyperpigmentation.
- Healing: Rosehip oil’s anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants aid in healing scars, acne, and other skin blemishes.
- Sun Damage Repair: The antioxidants in rosehip oil, including vitamins A and E, help repair and protect the skin from sun damage.
- Even Skin Tone: Regular use of rosehip oil can help even out skin tone and texture, giving you a smoother and more radiant complexion.

How to Make Tallow Balm
Step 1: Measure your ingredients using a digital scale. Melt the Tallow and Beeswax In a double boiler or a heat-safe bowl over a pot of simmering water, melt the tallow and beeswax together. Stir occasionally until both ingredients are fully melted and combined.
I like to use a tiny crockpot that I keep just for melting beeswax and oils for salves and balms. I can just dump the ingredients in and walk away checking back in occasionally. Look at thrift stores for a small crockpot or even a candle warmer. Otherwise here is a new one.
Step 2: Add Rosehip Oil Once the tallow and beeswax are melted, remove the mixture from heat and stir in the rosehip oil. Rosehip oil is packed with antioxidants and essential fatty acids, adding extra nourishment to your balm. You can also add any other essential oils that you wish. Lavender, frankincense, and tea tree all are great for your skin. Limit the amount of extra essential oils to about 10-15 drops.
Step 3: Pour into Containers Carefully pour the mixture into clean, dry containers. I just use a ladle for this purpose. Small glass jars or tins work well for containers. Allow the balm to cool and solidify completely before using. This usually takes a few hours at room temperature.
How to Use Tallow Balm
- As a Moisturizer: Apply a small amount of Tallow balm to your face and body after cleansing. The balm will melt upon contact with your skin, making it easy to spread. It’s especially beneficial for dry areas like elbows, knees, and heels. I love to use it under my eyes as well!
- For Soothing Irritated Skin: Use tallow balm to soothe irritated or inflamed skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help reduce redness and discomfort. It’s great for conditions like eczema and dermatitis.
- As a Lip Balm: Tallow balm can double as a nourishing lip balm. Apply a small amount to your lips to keep them soft and hydrated.
- Cuticle and Hand Care: Massage a bit of tallow balm into your cuticles and hands to keep them moisturized and healthy, especially during dry winter months.

Is adding an oil a must when making tallow balm? I have a recipe from another lady saying to add an oil such as.. jojoba, olive, almond. Also can I add oils such as vitamin E oil or castor oil to my balm?
Thanks Sheila
