Handmade Orange and Clove Lip Balm
In this post I share my recipe for handmade orange and clove lip balm. This is the simplest thing to make! You may like it better than any store bought balm! This post contains affiliate links.
This is pretty much the same recipe that I posted for udder balm last January. The main difference is that I slightly increased the bees wax and the essential oils are different. We really like the result. I hope you give this handmade orange and clove lip balm a try.
How to Make Homemade Lip Balm–It’s Easy!
This is one of the simplest natural body products to make. You can easily make over 20 tubes of lip balm in less than an hour. We make this twice a year. It is great to have extra tubes or little tins to give out to family and friends.
Ingredients and Materials for Lip Balm
You will need the following to make lip balm, I like to use all Organic ingredients when I can find them. I linked all of these items for you on Amazon. However, you can most likely find a medicine dropper around in your kitchen drawers, we stole ours out of an empty tincture bottle. A scale is helpful, but not necessary. A mini crockpot also makes it super easy, but a bowl nestled in a pot of simmering water works well too.
Containers, buy new or you could save empty cosmetic containers and fill those.

Pipette or a Glass Medicine Dropper
Getting Started Making Lip Balm at Home
First gather your ingredients. Next, either nestle a glass bowl in a small pot of simmering water, or plug in your crock pot. I have heard that candle warmers can work well also, you can nestle a mason jar inside of one. What I like about the crock pot method is that you don’t have to babysit it. You can just dump the ingredients in and let them melt together while you do other things. Then when you have a minute to put it in containers it’s ready to go.
Measuring
You can be super precise and weigh your ingredients, or you can just go with the tablespoon measurements that I give here. It doesn’t really have to be exact.
Orange and Clove Lip Balm
Equipment
- mini crock pot
Ingredients
- 4 oz Coconut Oil About 6 TBS
- 4 oz Shea Butter About 6 TBS
- 3 oz Bees Wax About 4 TBS
- 25 drops Clove Essential Oil
- 25 drops Orange Essential Oil
Instructions
- Melt all of the oils and the bees wax together, stirring a bit. This can be done in a double boiler (a bowl nestled in a pot of simmering water) or you can use a small crock pot. Once the oils and bees wax are melted together, add in the essential oils of your choice. I used approximately 25 drops of clove oil and approximately 25 drops of orange oil. Lastly, using a pipette or a medicine dropper, fill your containers. If using tubes, makes sure they are rolled all the way down and are ready to be filled. Let cool, put the lids on, label and enjoy!
How to Naturally Tint Lip Balm
If you would like to tint your lip balm, a natural way is to use mica powder. The amount is totally preference. We have added it before and found that we have made it a little too dark. So, start with a small amount and see what you think. For a recipe this size start with 2 tsp mica powder. You can buy it here.

Excited to try this! The shea butter is something new to me. I am gonna try experimenting with flavors – chocolate, strawberry, coconut. Your tins and labels are beautiful together.
Your flavors sound wonderful!
Sounds yummy Jenn. I have used Shea butter for decades. It’s so wonderful. Thanks for sharing. This is going on my FB wall (if that’s what it’s called) ❤️
Ha Ha! I am even less familiar with FB than you! Thanks for sharing!
Oooooh I have all these ingredients but none of the containers. Maybe I’ll put it in one family sized vat 😂
Oh yes, everyone sticking their little hands in there all the time! You would love that!

Thank you so much Lisa! Those tubes are so handy and so affordable!
Love this fragrance /flavour combination – and it’s so nice to have a natural product like this to moisturize dry winter lips. Many of the store bought products have ‘interesting’ ingredients! Pinning and shared on the Hearth and Soul Link Party Facebook page. Thank you for sharing!
Love that you know exactly what’s in this lip balm! I bet it smells wonderful. Shocked at how many toxic chemicals are in many over the counter lip balms. Pinned
Yes, I mean it’s our lips! We should definitely know what we are putting on them!! Thank you for stopping by and for commenting!
I love anything with orange! Your lip balm sounds wonderful and no chemical additives.
Thank you for visiting and commenting! It really is so simple and yes, no nasty additives!
Totally have to give this a try! I’m needing to buy chapstick to fill the crochet chapstick holders that I give out. Now I can just get the supplies I don’t have and make my own! The orange and clove combo sounds divine.
Hi Jennifer! I’m so happy to have stumbled on your blog! Question…could I substitute cocoa butter for the shea butter?
I think that would be worth trying! It should turn out fine! Glad you found the blog as well! Welcome!
I’ve made these twice now, and they’re always a hit with family and friends! I love how moisturizing they are! I add just a touch of castor oil once I take the mixture off the stove, and that gives it so much more moisture. Vitamin E also works well.
Thank you for sharing that tip! I enjoy using castor oil!
