Ingredients:
- 10 oz Coconut Oil (31%)
- 12 oz Lard or Palm Oil (38%)
- 8 oz Shea Butter (25%)
- 1.5 oz Castor Oil (5%)
- 1.5 TBS Turmeric
- 2 tsp Sea Salt
- 2 oz Fragrance Oil (optional, for scent)
- 2 tsp Kaolin Clay mixed with 1 TBS Water
- Sodium Hydroxide 4.35 oz (lye)
- 10 oz distilled or filtered water

Benefits of Each Ingredient in This Turmeric Soap Recipe:
- Coconut Oil: Known for its moisturizing properties, coconut oil helps to hydrate the skin without clogging pores. It also contains lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties, making it beneficial for acne-prone skin.
- Lard or Palm Oil: The amount of lye needed for each of these oils are nearly the same. Both oils provide hardness to the soap, creating a long-lasting bar. They also contribute to a creamy lather that cleanses the skin gently. Some people prefer lard some prefer palm oil. For most it is an ethical issue.
- Shea Butter: Renowned for its emollient and moisturizing properties, shea butter helps to soften and soothe the skin. It also contains vitamins A and E, which promote healthy skin cell regeneration.
- Castor Oil: This oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, which helps to moisturize and condition the skin. It also contributes to a rich, creamy lather in soap.
- Turmeric: Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties. It can help to brighten the skin, reduce redness, and even out skin tone. It’s also known to help with conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Some people claim it helps with acne.
- Essential Oils or Fragrance Oil: While optional, fragrance oil can add a pleasant scent to your soap. Rosemary and Tea tree pair nicely with the turmeric. Likewise, citrus fragrances pair well.
- Kaolin Clay: The main reason that I use Kaolin clay is that it anchors your fragrance, meaning it makes it last better in a bar of soap. Kaolin clay is also a gentle exfoliant that helps to remove dead skin cells and purify the skin. It also adds slip to the soap, making it easier to apply and more luxurious.
How to Make Turmeric Soap:
- Prepare Your Work Area: Ensure that your work area is clean. You may want to spread out some paper or cardboard to protect your counters. Wear appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and goggles.
- Mix the Lye Solution: In a well-ventilated area, carefully mix the lye into the water, (I always remember snow falling on a lake) stirring until fully dissolved. Allow the lye solution to cool to around 100°F (38°C)
- Measure Your Ingredients: Weigh out all your ingredients using a digital scale for accuracy. Melt the coconut oil, lard or palm oil, and shea butter in a large pot over low heat. I always measure out my ingredients first. I use a lot of dishes but it keeps everything ready and at hand.
- Combine the Oils and Lye Solution: Once the oils and lye solution are at a similar temperature, within ten degrees of each other, pour the lye solution into the pot of oils. Use a stick blender to blend the mixture until it reaches a light trace, where the soap batter thickens but not quite to a pudding-like consistency.
- Add the Turmeric, Fragrance Oil, and Kaolin Clay: Mix in the turmeric, fragrance oil, and kaolin clay until fully incorporated. Turmeric does seem to accelerate trace a bit. Be cautious and go back and forth with the immersion blender and just stirring.
- Pour Into Molds: Pour the soap batter into molds and tap the molds gently on the counter to release any air bubbles. Allow the soap to cure for 4-6 weeks, turning it occasionally to ensure even drying.
- Enjoy Your Turmeric Soap: Once cured, your turmeric soap is ready to use. Enjoy the benefits of this luxurious soap, knowing that you’ve crafted it with care and natural ingredients.
