Five Things Friday August 2024
It’s been a long time since I’ve done one of these but there’s quite a bit to share so I decided to do it this way! I hope you enjoy catching up with The Everyday Farmhouse, just some random stuff from around here!
My Work is in a Magazine!
Willow and Sage Autumn 2024I’m excited to share that Willow and Sage Magazine has published two of my articles! A tutorial on Lard Candles and one on Handmade Soap! Pretty exciting to see my own work in print!
The magazine is now on newsstands or you can purchase it by clicking on the image below
It is a beautiful issue with so many gorgeous articles with tutorials on handmade bath & body. They have asked me to share in their winter edition and one of their sister magazines as well. I’ll share those with you when they come out.
Our Addition
My intention is truly to document all of this with video. I have taken plenty of footage it’s just the process of putting it together that is getting me! Hopefully, my son can help me this week as he’s great at video editing and has the project vision!
In the meantime, here are some photos. Things feel like they are moving very slowly right now. The basement is dug and the footers are dug. However, we are waiting on the concrete people. Hopefully, they will start next week. I know that this is how the process goes…slowly. As I sat here typing this morning, there was a crew that delivered what looks like forms, so there is hope!
There have been few hiccups along the way. The main issue digging a connection from our tiny one-room basement to the new basement. This involved digging under our current dining room. Turns out it was built on a slab and they had to add support. As he dug back further he found an old set of stairs. Likely, it was the original entrance to the house. It was quite an ordeal to bust all of that out. Now it’s done and our place looks like quite a mess! It has to get bad before it can get better…I keep reminding myself of that!
Choosing Paint
In the meantime, my husband is changing out all of the rotted windows in the old part of the house. All the trim has to come down. I am going to make some people mad but I am planning to paint all of the oak trim in our home. I have never really liked oak-colored trim, and while it is very lovely to some people, I have lived with it for 12 years and it has not grown on me at all! It is just too much orange for my taste.
The other issue is that we will not be buying expensive oak trim for the new part of the house. I want it to look cohesive of course and I think this is the best way to make it all flow together better.
I love the old colonial look of painted trim. Inspiration above. This weekend I am going to test some samples in our home with our lighting. I thought I was sold on Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore but when I tested it in our house it looked way more grey than it did online
This weekend I am testing Natural Linen by Benjamin Moore. I will update you on how it goes. I used to love white trim throughout a home. However, we painted our kitchen trim white and I feel like it is nearly impossible to keep clean. It just looks so dingey all the time. We have a lot of people living here so it seems unreasonable to have white trim, plus I really love the feel of the images above.
Farmhouse Teas
I’ve shared about Farmhouse Teas before but they are having some great sales right now and I love supporting them! Their elderberry syrup mix is on sale right now!
Proverbs Chapter 1: 20-23
Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets: She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she utterth her words, saying, How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their sconings, and fools hate knowledge? Turn ye at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
We talked about these verses on Sunday. They really hit home for the times in which we live. Truth is scorned at and even though wisdom, even common sense dare I say is crying out to us as a nation, we seem to want to bury our heads and believe lies. I pray for us. May we stand up for truth and turn back to God!
I stand in agreement with your prayer. I pray that our eyes will be opened, and our ears will be attuned to God’s voice. May God continually bless you.
I agree with the sentiment expressed in the closing of this post. Praying is the very best thing we can do, plus making sure I am personally standing for Truth in a way that shows love for others.
I love that, yes always speaking truth in love!
