Best Sewing Supplies for Beginners
Sewing supplies can feel overwhelming when you are a beginner. I remember looking at the shelves in JoAnn Fabric and having no idea what I would actually need. I wasn’t familiar with the sewing terms so I definitely didn’t know if I needed any “notions”.

The truth is you, don’t need a ton of equipment to start sewing. If you are looking to sew home decor items like pillow covers or throw blankets, a sewing machine is probably your first essential purchase. After that first larger investment, the rest of the items are small and relatively inexpensive.
By the way “notions” are just your sewing essentials!
Let’s look at the items that will set you up for success when you start sewing!
1. Sewing Machine
You could like me probably get a hand-me-down machine that may last you for many years. I had two machines given to me in my early years of sewing. An old Singer, and a Montgomery Wards machine. I was very thankful at the time and I sewed lots and lots of items with those old machines!
However, with cast-off machines there usually comes issues. Many times I really thought I hated sewing simply because my machine was acting up. It would get a nest of thread under the fabric, or the tread would keep breaking. All frustrating issues that can really take the wind out of your sails.
I finally invested in a new (very affordable) sewing machine when I wanted to teach my kids how to sew. I have never looked back! A new machine will come with a manual and will likely be much easier to navigate.
For beginners, a simple, user-friendly model with basic stitches and functions is ideal. Look for features such as:
- Straight stitch
- Zigzag stitch
- Buttonhole function
- Adjustable stitch length and width
Brands like Brother, Singer, and Janome offer reliable models that are perfect for beginners. I purchased a basic Singer in 2015 and it has worked well every year since, I have been very pleased with it! If you have a passion for sewing then it may be worth it to upgrade to a computerized machine with more bells and whistles!
2. Fabric Scissors
A good pair of fabric scissors is essential for clean and precise cuts. Avoid using them on paper or other materials to keep them sharp. Investing in high-quality scissors, such as Gingher or Fiskars, will pay off in the long run.
A kit like this one would be great for a beginner!
These small scissors are great for trimming thread!
3. Seam Ripper
Mistakes happen, especially when you’re learning. A seam ripper is a handy tool for removing stitches without damaging your fabric. Look for one with a comfortable grip and a sharp point for precise work. These are inexpensive, but I gave you some fancier options in case you’re looking for a gift.
4. Measuring Tape and Sewing Ruler
Accuracy is key in sewing, and a flexible measuring tape is indispensable for taking body measurements and measuring fabric. Opt for a tape that is at least 60 inches long and has both inches and centimeters.
In addition to a measuring tape, you would really enjoy a sewing ruler. I have one listed below in a kit for a rotary cutter and self-healing mat.
5. Pins and Pin Cushion
Straight pins are used to hold fabric pieces together before sewing. A pin cushion or magnetic pin holder keeps your pins organized and easily accessible. Glass head pins are a great choice as they are easy to see and can withstand the heat of an iron.
There are a multitude of cute pin cushions, I have the original tomato one that looks so nostalgic. However, the magnetic ones look super handy!
I recently added these clips to my sewing arsenal, you can certainly live without them, but they are so handy for holding multiple layers of fabric together!
6. Hand Sewing Needles and Machine Needles
Even if you primarily use a sewing machine, hand-sewing needles are essential for finishing touches, repairs, and delicate work. A variety pack that includes different sizes and types is a good investment.
Extra machine needles and an assortment of needles for different fabrics are also essential.
7. Thread
Quality thread is crucial for strong and durable seams. Start with a basic set of polyester thread in various colors to match your fabric. Brands like Gutermann and Coats & Clark are known for their high-quality threads.
One thing to look at is how the thread is wound. Gutermann thread is cross-wound which is good for a machine that has the thread holder horizontal to the machine. Coats & Clark has their thread wound stacked which is best for a machine that has the holder vertical to the machine.
Please note: I have used both on my machine without issue.
8. Fabric
Choose a selection of fabrics that are easy to work with, such as cotton or cotton blends. These fabrics are forgiving for beginners and come in a wide range of patterns and colors. As you gain confidence, you can explore different types of fabrics like knits, silks, and wool.
Using fabrics like knit requires interfacing to hold them stable in the machine as you stitch.
9. Iron and Ironing Board
Pressing your fabric before and during sewing ensures crisp seams and professional-looking results. A steam iron and a sturdy ironing board are essential for this task.
A steam iron is ideal. You can go all out and spend lots of money on an iron. Personally, I just purchase the one linked above. If you want something more high-end, there are a couple of popular options below:
As far as ironing boards, you can get by with a tabletop one. Or you could use a larger one that can be stored away in a closet.
10. Marking Tools
Marking tools help you transfer patterns and measurements onto your fabric. Chalk pencils, tailor’s chalk, and washable fabric markers are all excellent choices. Ensure the markings are visible and will wash out easily.
For years I used one of my kid’s washable markers and it worked just fine! However, a chalk pencil is very handy!
11. Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat
For straight cuts a rotary cutter and self-healing cutting mat are invaluable. They make cutting faster and more precise, especially for quilting and patchwork projects.
This is one of those things that I didn’t invest in for many many years. However, it has made sewing so much better! I cannot cut straight to save my life and this helps immensely!
12. Storage Solutions
Keeping your sewing space organized is crucial for efficiency and creativity. Invest in storage solutions such as clear bins, drawer organizers, and a sewing box to keep your supplies neatly arranged.
In all honesty, I keep a lot of my sewing supplies in a cute shoebox. However, for things like thread and notions, it’s very nice to have some better organization!
Starting off sewing with the right supplies will set you up for success and make the learning process enjoyable. As you become more experienced, you can gradually add more specialized tools and equipment to your collection. Remember, practice makes perfect, so dive in, experiment, and most importantly, have fun with your sewing projects!
