Toilet Cleaning Bombs | A Simple DIY
Maintaining a clean and fresh bathroom can sometimes feel like a never-ending battle, especially when it comes to tackling the toilet. Traditional toilet cleaners can be harsh, expensive, and full of chemicals. But what if there was a natural and effective alternative? Enter DIY toilet cleaning bombs – small, fizzy tablets that can help keep your toilet clean and smelling great with minimal effort.
Why Toilet Cleaning Bombs?
Toilet cleaning bombs are not only effective at cleaning and deodorizing your toilet, but they are also easy to make and cost-effective. By using simple, easy to find ingredients, you can avoid harsh chemicals and add one more thing to your DIY arsenal! Plus, they add a fun and satisfying element to your cleaning routine, thanks to their fizzing action.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
This is a big batch, it will make 12-16 toilet bombs depending on the size of your mold. Silicone molds are the easiest to work with but you can try other things like an ice cube tray. My mold holds about 3 oz in each compartment. So your yield will vary depending on what you use.
I use a mixture of lemon and pine essential oils and the smell is so good! The whole house smells so good when I make these! Feel free to use any oil that you love!
- 2 cups baking soda
- 1 cup citric acid (you can usually find this in the canning section of your local store)
- 1 tablespoon hydrogen peroxide, white vinegar or water
- 40 drops of lemon and pine essential oils (or your favorite scent)
- A mold, I used a silicone one like this
Instructions:
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the baking soda and citric acid. These two ingredients will create the fizzing action when they come into contact with water.
- Add Wet Ingredients: Slowly add the hydrogen peroxide and oils to the dry mixture, stirring continuously. The mixture should be slightly damp but not wet. I put the peroxide and essential oils in a little spray bottle and spritz the surface of the dry mixture and then mix. I do about 5 sprays and then stir, 5 sprays and stir. The mixture should pack together when you squeeze some in your hand. You don’t want to soak the dry mixture, a little fizzing is ok but you really want to save that for when you are cleaning! So go easy when adding the wet ingredients.
- Mold the Bombs: Spoon the mixture into silicone molds, pressing down firmly to pack the mixture tightly. You can use any shape of mold you like, but small, round molds work well for toilet cleaning bombs. This step is messy no matter how careful you are.
- Let Them Dry: Place the filled molds in the freezer for a few hours, then allow the bombs to dry and harden for another 12 hours. Once they are completely dry, remove them from the molds and store them in an airtight container until ready to use.
Why Are My Toilet Bombs Overflowing in the Mold?
I think this has to do with humidity and heat in your home. This happened with my first two batches so I started popping them in the freezer after I put them in the mold. This did the trick, no more overflowing as they dried.
After being in the freezer for an hour, you can remove them and let them dry on the counter. They won’t dry out completely in the freezer, they need air circulation.
Can I Put Toilet Bombs in the Toilet Tank?
Yes, you can use these in the tank to freshen the toilet.
Are These Toilet Bombs Septic Safe?
Stronger chemicals like bleach are not recommended for septic systems. The minimal amount of citric acid in these is considered safe for a septic system. I got this information online, if you are uncertain if these are safe, check with your septic person.
Do Toilet Bombs Really Work?
They do work to freshen and clean the toilet. However, you will still need to use the scrub brush from time to time. They cannot get up under the rim and scrub any hard water or other toilet stuff…
How to Use:
To use your DIY toilet cleaning bombs, simply drop one or two bombs into the toilet bowl and let it fizz and dissolve. Use a toilet brush to scrub any remaining stains or residue, then flush the toilet. Your toilet will be left clean, fresh, and free of harsh chemicals.
If you just want the bathroom to smell fresh, drop one in the toilet before company arrives.
DIY toilet cleaning bombs are a simple and effective way to keep your toilet clean and fresh without resorting to harsh chemicals. By using natural ingredients and essential oils, you can create a cleaning solution that is both effective and environmentally friendly. Give them a try and see the difference for yourself!
