Stovetop Elderberry Syrup with Apple Cider Vinegar
A sweet, tangy, and thick syrup perfect for taking during cold and flu season. Can be made with fresh or dried elderberries.
- 1 Cup Fresh Elderberries If using dried use 1/2 cup
- 4 Cups Filtered Water
- 6 Whole Cloves
- 2 Whole Cinnamon Sticks
- 1 Cup Raw Honey
- ⅓ Cup Apple Cider Vinegar Raw with mother
- 2 TBS Arrowroot Powder
In a medium covered pot on the stove, bring three cups of water, elderberries, cinnamon and cloves to a boil. Turn down to a simmer and remove the lid. Let it simmer on the stove for 25 minutes until it has thickened some and reduced. Next, Using a fine mesh strainer, strain the liquid into a glass bowl or measuring cup. Use a spoon and really squish out all of the liquid from the elderberries.Return the liquid to the stove and turn the heat on. In a measuring cup whisk together the remainin 1 cup of water and the ¼ cup arrowroot powder. Add this to the syrup on the stove. Cook for another 10 minutes until it is thick.Once thick, remove from stove add in the ⅓ cup ACV and the 1 Cup honey. Mix well.Place in a quart jar and keep in the fridge for up to two months.
